Catholic Charities in Boston will be providing assistance for immigrants
eligible for DREAM Act. Please see below for their press release and
forward this along to anyone who may need this help. This assistance is
free. There will also be an information session about new deferred
action offer by the Obama administration to certain undocumented youth
and young adults on June 20th at 4pm at Labouré Center 275 West Broadway, South Boston.
BOSTON—June 15, 2012—In response to the Obama Administration’s announcement today that it will use administrative authority to consider deferred action for “DREAMers” Catholic Charities will hold information sessions, starting on June 20th and offers a bilingual hotline with up-to-date information and guidance on this important relief.
The administration’s plan of relief is for immigrants who arrived in the United States before the age of 16, are currently at or under the age of 30, and have been living in the country for at least five years. Beginning today these “DREAMers,” as they are called, will not be deported and are eligible to receive a renewable two-year work permit. To qualify, immigrants must either be students or have earned a high school degree, GED or served in the military. They must also not pose a threat to public safety or national security.
This announcement will affect thousands of young immigrants in Massachusetts alone who will now be able to use their skills and education for the benefit of the Commonwealth. “We are thrilled with this decision by the Obama administration and are committed to assisting the DREAMers in any way that we can,” said Marjean A. Perhot, Director of the Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services. “It is important that those who are eligible receive accurate information, avoid being taken advantage of by unscrupulous practitioners, and know that we’re here to support them.”
The Hotline for DREAMers will be active as of 6 p.m. Friday (6/22) evening and can be reached at 617-464-8100. The unattended hotline provides callers with a message in English and Spanish that includes dates of upcoming information sessions and provides a warning against filing premature applications.
